DESCRIPTION: An oil painting on canvas set in a thin wooden frame. The work is abstract, featuring roughly defined vertical bands of color. At the very left is a dark violet band that extends from top to bottom, followed by a blue violet, gray, blue, green, pink-gray, violet-gray, and ending with a light gray. The bands are not straight by any means; they are compressed and extended in different points, by rectangular blocks that extend out from a particular color. In addition, hues such as a bright orange are present not as bands but as smaller forms that interrupt the vertical pattern. Colors were layered so that spots of differing colors are visible under the top colors. The use of vertical lines is unique to Morrison’s style, which usually depicted this type of composition in horizontal lines.TITLE: The PalisadesARTIST: George Morrison (American, 1919-2000).CIRCA: January 1958MEDIUM: Oil on CanvasDIMENSIONS: Unframed: 40 inches height x 54 inches width Framed: 401⁄2 inches height x 541⁄2 inches widthINSCRIPTIONS: Signature and date lower right: Verso label is a Ford Foundation Program for Artists with artist information including address, birth date, date of work, title, medium, and size.EXHIBITIONS: Exhibited on behalf of the Ford Foundation Program for Artists on or after 1958
